Covid-19 has required everyone to make adjustments and sacrifices for the health of our communities. While progress has been made, significant challenges remain which means we all need to pay close attention to our self-care and that of our loved ones.
Physical distancing is key. So too is mental health self-care including exercise; compelling research shows exercise is essential to mental health. Nordic walking with poles is an excellent way to enjoy fresh air and exercise while maintaining safe physical distancing.
If you are missing your regular gym, fitness classes or other exercise activities, you may be interested to learn that, compared to walking without poles, Nordic walking provides a better cardiovascular workout, strengthens the upper body (core, triceps, lat muscles), burns more calories, improves upper body bone health, and improves posture all while reducing impact on your low back, hips, knees, ankles and feet. It’s a fun, safe, outdoor all-in-one activity. And you can go as far or as fast as you like to create your personalized workout.
You may also be missing visits to your favourite physiotherapist. Again, you may be interested to learn that Nordic walking is both fitness and therapy. I integrate Nordic walking, where indicated, within my professional physiotherapy patient care. People with a broad range of diagnoses have benefitted including: chronic low back pain, Achilles tendinitis, frozen shoulder or rotator cuff pain, hip and knee arthritis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis and more.
There are different poles and different techniques for people with fitness vs rehabilitation needs. It’s easy to learn but knowledgeable instruction is key. Like any activity, poor technique won’t bring the same benefits and may cause injury.
I personally discovered Nordic walking 5 years ago and haven’t looked back. I incorporate it into my varied fitness regime alongside running, tennis, skiing, yoga… My hope is that the numerous therapeutic benefits of Nordic walking will enable me to enjoy the activities I love for many years to come. I wish the same for you.
